Hannah Mayree is a California-based songwriter, banjo player, cultural organizer, and founder of The Black Banjo Reclamation Project, an initiative uplifting the African roots of the banjo and creating space for Black artists to reclaim their connection to the instrument.
With a rich, soulful voice and an intuitive command of the banjo, they create soundscapes that bridge past and present—blending African diasporic rhythms, Appalachian textures, and lyrical storytelling. Notable performances include supporting Rhiannon Giddens, and playing beloved festivals and venues such as Hardly Strictly, Sierra Grass, Fathers Day Festival and The Freight and Salvage.
Their performances invite deep listening and collective reflection, offering music as a tool for healing, liberation, and community connection. Whether performing solo, with collaborators, or leading engaging workshops, Hannah embodies a living legacy of resilience and creativity at the heart of Black folk traditions.
Look out for new singles and her sophomore full length record in 2026.

“Mayree is equally talented in activism and culture-crafting as in music”

“Top drawer emotionally fueled folky grooviness with melodic twists that cut to the heart.”

“Some voices seem, as soon as you hear them, like gifts from God and Hannah Mayree’s voice is one of those presents… It’s truly American, a prairie of a sound. And when combined with a strum-plucked banjo, the mix is complete.”
- American Songwriter
“We want to inspire everyone to reach back to who their ancestors were, and who we are now, and how we can honor that and bring integrity back into what we’re doing with music. The inspiration [for the BBRP] is the earth, really, because that’s where the instruments are coming from.”
